Abkürzung HSV, zu den Herpesviren gehörendes DNA-Virus, Erreger der unter Primaten weit verbreiteten Herpesinfektionen (Herpes). Es werden zwei Typen unterschieden: HSV I befällt vorwiegend Lippen, Mundschleimhaut, die Hornhaut des Auges und kann (allerdings sehr selten) eine Meningoenzephalitis verursachen, HSV II verursacht v. a. genitale und anale Schleimhautläsionen. Bei beiden Typen wurden im Tierversuch Krebs erregende Eigenschaften nachgewiesen.
